Covergirl Oct. 10th, 2005 @ 02:37 pm
I took myself to Ulta the other night. I brought home a bag of small things, most notably, two tubes of Covergirl's Shadow Squeeze. These are quick drying eye shadows in tubes! I bought Cocoa and Latte. Despite the shimmer in the Latte, these are gorgeous neutrals, perfect for any season. Time will tell how they wear though. It's hard to get some cream shadows to last. Sometimes they need to be set with loose powder. I think I will wear them tonight. The shades compliment each other perfectly. Oh, and if you click on the picture of the girl in blue eye shadow, Covergirl redirects you here.

leave in conditioner woes Aug. 16th, 2005 @ 02:50 pm
Sometimes it takes too much effort to detangle my hair when it's wet. Overworking my hair leads to damage. I hate hate hate split ends. I am not having the best luck with leave-in conditioners these days. I always find something wrong with them after a while. I am non-committal when it comes to beauty products anyway. I prefer to skip around until I find what works. Anyway, I came up with what I thought was a decent solution. I squirted a bit of L'OREAL Smooth Intense conditioner into a spray bottle, along with a bit of bottled water. I figured this might make a more emollient leave-in. I spritzed my hair with this last night before I tied it up for sleep. The hair feels nice now. The problem is the bottle of homemade leave-in looks terrible. I have to shake it up or else it separates. It's a good thing this conditioner only costs a few dollars. I didn't waste too much.

pedicure Aug. 16th, 2005 @ 02:43 pm

I went to a local nail salon for a pedicure Thursday afternoon. I used my bottle of "Pussy pink" nail polish I bought from a gift shop at the Hard Rock hotel in Las Vegas a few years ago. My request for a simple design, ie, a flower, became a row or rhinestones along the top of each large toenail. This was just beautiful...until the rhinestones started to peel off. They were only stuck on with what looked like clear nail polish or top coat. Now I just see nail at the top where the rhinestones used to be because the rhinestones took polish off too. Thankfully it didn't cost too much.

manly pressing comb Jul. 28th, 2005 @ 12:48 am

I froogled "hot comb" and found the above. This is an ad Remington used to publicize it's steam producing hot comb circa 1972. I wonder how long that product lasted? It seems the "mist" would go against everything the straightening benefits the hot comb would provide. This reminds me of that evil Caruso Molecular steam roller set I begged for [and got!] in the early nineties. Was that ever a bad idea. My hair took one blast of said steam and I was left with dull frizz. I have never recovered from the experience.

Burt's Bee's skin care. Jul. 27th, 2005 @ 09:23 pm
I tried Burt's Bees facial care. I based my choices on a chart the company provided. I bought two cleansers and a toner for "Normal" skin. I figured I could interchange or otherwise play around with the cleansers. I bought the Lemon Poppy Seed Facial Cleanser and the Orange Essence Facial Cleanser. I was very disappointed with both of these products. The packaging was great! The citrus scents were alright. It all went to hell from there. Both cleansers contained far too much oil and fat and zero foaming agents. This made the cleansers nearly impossible to rinse off. I was left with a waxy film even after I rinsed well. The film was so thick that I could have used Veet's razorless hair remover to scrape the cleanser off my skin. Not even the so-called Wild Lettuce Toner would remove it. I didn't like the toner either. Basically, I made a mistake. To add insult to injury, the apothecary overcharged me on all three of the products!

» here comes the gift!
I found the perfect gift for a bride to be while shopping in Sephora Beverly Center. It is a gift set called Here Comes the Bride. It comes housed in a big shiny box that is surely reusable. The products within pamper hair, face, body, hands, and feet. I figured this was the perfect gift to tote along to the hen do I plan to attend this coming weekend. Philosophy has a nice product. I would happily accept this gift if I were on the receiving end!

» shampoo success.
I tried my new products today. I washed my hair with Kerastase Nutritive Bain Oleo-Relax first, with a bit of olive oil mixed in for extra smoothness. The Kerastase masque is as pink as the jar implies! The scent reminds me of childhood (instant pudding perhaps?). I applied the masque and covered my hair with a conditioning cap. I let the masque sit on my hair for at least thirty minutes while I ate breakfast and watched TV. The masque was very easy to rinse out. I towel dried with a microfiber hair towel. I applied a few pumps of the Ojon Hydrating Styling Cream (More oil based.) and the Kerastase Protective Polishing Cream (More water based.) to detangle and tame frizz. I figured my thick, course hair could take the extra moisture, especially in L.A.'s sudden humid heat wave. The comb easily passed through the hair. There was no greasy feel at all. I sprayed in a bit of Phyto Style Heat Protective Spray (discontinued?), followed by a few dabs of Lee Stafford's Poker Straight Glistening Straightening Balm. I blew my hair smooth and dry, flat ironed it, and slicked in the Kerastase Nutritive Vinyle Nutri-Sculpt. I like it! My hair doesn't feel heavy or slick. It feels very light, despite the products used. The true test is an adventure out in the heat. I planned to post pictures until I realized I look too terrible in the face today to use any of them. I may do that next time.

» Kerastase and Ojon

I spied a special section on haircare in the August 2005 issue of InStyle ("The Long & Short Of It," page 293) .  I noticed a new Kerastase pomade in the section for short hair.  Being the devoted Kerastase girl that I am, I had to check it out!  I walked into the L Salon & Beauty Lounge on Beverly Blvd. this afternoon.  This salon predominantly displays Kerastase products on their shelves.  I was particularly attracted to the Kerastase Reflections Chroma Protect line.  This line, for color treated hair, comes housed in pink packaging.  I passed on the shampoo and the daily conditioner since I probably have something comparable already.  I bought the   Deep Radiance Enhancing Masque and the Protective Polishing Cream instead.  I am always on the look out for a good deep conditioner and a leave in.  Achieving smooth hair is close to impossible otherwise.

I also bought the Kerastase Nutritive Vinyle Nutri-Sculpt, the pomade featured in InStyle.  The ingredients aren't too out of the ordinary.  I see varying amounts of water, silicones, polyquats, and such in these three products.  Some folks argue that Kerastase is too expensive for what it's worth.  I attribute a part of that to styling techniques, not to mention the condition of the hair in relation to the products used.  For instance, I had bad luck with the Lee Stafford products I brought home from Las Vegas.  I later realized this was because I didn't use any leave in.  I went straight to a relaxing balm and a heat protecting spray, thinking that would give me the desired style.  Nope.  I paid for this skipped step with a bad hair day.  This is probably why so many products are misunderstood and rejected.

I later went to Beauty Collection Apothecary near The Farmer's Market.  The store hasn't changed much since my last visit over two years ago.  The cosmetics and the skin care still reside in the front.  The body care is in middle, with hair care on one side and candles on the other.  I was particulary struck by Ojon Ojon is obviously a luxury hair care line.  Ojan wants you to know that they are "the people of beautiful hair."  I picked over the seemingly uber moisturizing shampoo and conditioners until I found the Hydrating Styling Cream. This cream contains water, silicones, palm nut oil, and various fruit essences and preservatives.  The little brown beads in the white cream contain the palm nut oil.  Let's see if this really tames frizz.  I figure this is a good introduction to the line.  I was lucky my MAC PPID fell from my wallet at the time of check out because this knocked a few bucks off my purchase.  This would have cost me thirty dollars otherwise.  I bought it for twenty-nine and change, including tax!  Perhaps I can try Ojon's deep conditioner and pomade once my new Kerastase runs out.  I am very excited to learn more about this line.
